- perceptual - gut feel
- ideological - accepted norm
- Theoretical - steering principles (teleological- ethical egoism (only self interest), utiliatarianism (greatest good)) (deontological - ethical formalism (based on what is universally culturally acceptable)- KANT)
Ground Rules for Effective groups
- test assumptions and inferences- I have inferred by this action that __, am I correct?
- share relevant info -help each other solve
- focus on interests, not positions - if you all take a EE position to meet interest - no consensus - what is most important interests?
- be specific (use examples)-
- agree on important words - red v purple
- explain reasons -
- disagree openly
- make statements, then ask for FAQ
- jointly design ways to test disagreements/solutions
- discuss the undiscussable - dont be defensive!
- keep discussion focused - discuss until all understand
- no distracting/cheap shots
- all members participate in all phases
- exchange relevant info w/ non group members
- consensus
- self critiques - invite others to disagree and listen to their opinions

Kelley’s Attribution Theory
Principle of covariance – when things happen together, people assume they cause each other or they form causal beliefs based on 3 characteristics of the event : consistency, consensus, distinctiveness.
consistency, consensus, distinctiveness.
C C D Cause
Hi Lo Lo Personal J doesnt’ like taking out the trash
Hi Hi Hi Environmental no one likes taking out the trash
Lo Lo Hi Circumstancial no one wants to take out trash today because its smelly
Biases
Fundamental Attribution Error- your own behavior=environment others=personality/disposition
Ego – Defensive Bias/self-serving bias – people accept successes, reject failures (environmental attribution)
Ego – Centric Bias: /false concensus bias: attitutdes held by me are correct and should be widely accepted: If you love your O, less likely to beleive others are quitting BC they dont like it.
Self MGMT process
Stimulus MGMT: manipulate environ cues that stimulate behavior (sam’s joking)
Selective stimulus removal : removing distracting stimulus (put pic of family in drawer)
Selective stimulus exposure : ensure that you are shown good stimulus : role model
Consequence MGMT : self administer affirmative consequences when u reach goals and aversive when not
Self reinforcement : get good when do good: get TV if finish reading this
Self punishment: giving away if no do good: no facebook if don’t finish before 12
Cognition MGMT: controlling thoughts that effect behavior – think too much
Formulating goals: self contract w/ self
Formulating strategies for goal achievement: timely etc
Mental rehearsal : think about how to act
Self instruction : job interview: mentally remind self what to do (ie betsy freakout)
Increasing thought control efficacy: you can’t prevent birds of worry but you can prevent them from building a nest
